What Are the Best Shortwave Radios?

There are many different makes and models of shortwave radios, and they vary greatly in cost, features, size, complexity, and other factors. There is no one "right" shortwave radio for everyone. The best shortwave radio for you depends primarily on your listening interests.

However, there are some features and specifications you should look for in any shortwave radio you consider. They are:

* Frequency coverage. Shortwave frequencies are usually considered those from the upper end of the AM broadcasting band, 1700 kHz, up to 30 MHz. The minimum frequency coverage you should look for is 540 kHz to 30 MHz. Most shortwave radios sold today also tune down to 150 kHz, covering the longwave band.

* Frequency Readout. Most shortwave radios sold today have a digital display showing the frequency the radio is tuned to. A few radios, usually less expensive models, have an analog "slide rule" frequency readout that does not indicate the precise frequency the radio is receiving. It can be very difficult and frustrating to find a station on a specific frequency without a digital display, so a digital frequency display should be a "must" for any shortwave radio you're considering. However, an analog readout shortwave radio can make a good, inexpensive "spare" radio for traveling, etc.

* Modes. Some shortwave radios tune only AM mode stations, and these can be satisfactory for listening to most shortwave broadcasting stations. However, SSB is used by a few broadcasting stations in addition to ham, aeronautical, military, and maritime communications. A shortwave radio that can receive SSB in addition to AM will greatly expand your listening options on shortwave.

* Selectivity Options. Selectivity is discussed in more detail below, but you need to consider how many selectivity bandwidths you can select. Some portable receivers allow you to choose between "wide" and "narrow" selectivity bandwidths, while some desktop shortwave radios have as many as five selectivity bandwidths. Narrow selectivity bandwidths let you reduce interference from stations on adjacent frequencies, although the audio quality of the desired station will be reduced as the selectivity is narrowed.

* Antenna Connections. Some portable radios come with a built-in telescoping antenna but have no provision for an external antenna. Other portable shortwave radios have a jack that let you connect an external antenna. Most tabletop shortwave radios have connectors for external antennas. These usually include connectors for antennas using 50 ohm coaxial cables and others for antennas using ordinary insulated "hook-up" wire. External antennas normally give better reception than built-in antennas, although built-in antennas are usually satisfactory for listening to major international broadcasting stations. However, built-in antennas give poor results inside buildings with steel frames, like a high-rise condominium or apartment buildings. In such cases, the ability to connect an external antenna (even it is only a few feet of wire outside a window) can make a significant improvement in reception.

Before you choose a radio you should priorities the features that you require. For example if you or the person you are buying a radio for is elderly, you may want a radio with nice clear easy to operate control knobs. Whilst a business man travelling the world and living out of a suitcase would want a compact, light, shortwave radio.

With so many different makes and models of shortwave radio, choosing one can be difficult if you don't understand the technical jargon. Shortwave radios vary greatly in cost, features, size and complexity. There is no one shortwave radio right for everyone and different people have different listening interests.

There are a few factors that you will need to know before considering a 'AM FM Shortwave Radio'
Your Budget

Prices will vary depending on your needs. Do you want plenty of features, a wide coverage or a powerful receiver. Do you need portability? The size of the radio will also impact on the price.

A factor you should consider when selecting an 'AM FM Shortwave Radio' is how portable it is. Do you want a shortwave radio you can easily store, Maybe one that you can take with you on a camping expedition or other outdoor pursuit. Portable AM FM SW radio's are convenient, but they don't have the strength you can get from a tabletop shortwave radio. A tabletop model is generally a lot heavier and larger, therefore, it is not convenient to carry in your backpack.

Frequency Considerations

One should consider the shortwave frequency range. While the am fm shortwave radio vary in their scope, shortwave frequency almost always ranges from 2300 to 26,100 kHz.

A good rule of thumb is to follow this minimal: Between 5730 and 21,850 kHz for an AM FM SW radio. If you are a CB Ham operator then SSB (Single Side Band) may be your choice, that is part of a lot of SW tuners. A digital frequency tuner is also an option if accuracy of tuning is needed. Digital tuners are more accurate than manual dial tuners.

Antenna Types

The built-in antennas of portable and pocket shortwave radios are adequate for picking up major international broadcasters, but are less effective for fainter signals. Another weakness is when trying to use them from within a steel frame building. A better reception will be received with a tabletop shortwave radio due to the external antenna jacks. It is possible, however, to purchase portable am fm shortwave radio with an external jack as well as a built-in antenna.

What Are Short Range Radio Devices?

Short range radios are highly cost effective and very reliable communication devices. These devices vary from each other depending on their features, cost and size etc. Not all the short range radios suit everybody. There are few factors that should be considered before choosing a radio for best usage. So here are some of factors you should consider before choosing for a best short range radio.

Frequency Range:

Frequency is the primary and the most important issue that should be considered when selecting a radio. Most of the radios come with a digital display which shows the frequency of the radio. Few radios are less expensive as they have an analog "slide rule" frequency which doesn't reveal the precise frequency of the radio. Make sure to get a radio with good frequency range for better usability. Here are the frequency ranges for few of the famous radio devices available.

Note that VHF stands for Very High Frequency, and UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency.

Motorola: Frequency Range: VHF: 136-174 MHz; UHF: 403-470 MHz.
Kenwood: VHF: 136-174MHz; UHF: 400-430MHz, 440-470MHz
Icom: VHF 136 - 174 MHz UHF 400 - 470 MHz
Vertex Standard: VHF: 134-174MHz; UHF: 380-450 MHz, 450-512 MHz
HYT: VHF: 136-174 MHz; UHF: 400-420 MHz 440-470 MHz
TaitNet: 136-174MHz/400-520MHz

Antenna:

Almost every radio comes with a built in telescopic antenna however, there are radios that have external ones too. Built in antennas are good for some extent, however, external antennas give better reception than that of inbuilt antennas. When the radios are used inside a building or a room that has steel frames then the output quality of radios goes down.

Built in antennas give great results to pickup international broadcast channels and they are not so effective for fainter signals. Radios with external antenna jacks can catch these fainter signals. Buying a radio with external jack as well as built in antenna is always a good idea to catch both international as well as fainter signals.

Selectivity options:

One should always consider the number of selectivity bandwidths available in a radio. Few radio receivers have very few bandwidths. But few have wide number of selectivity bandwidths. Radios with narrow selectivity bandwidths have less interference on adjacent frequencies.

So, before choosing a radio, you should prioritise the requirements and features you wanted. These radios are generally come handy and flexible to working people who needs to stay connected with each other. Generally these radios can communicate with in a range of 3 miles. These radios are low cost communication devices that have no services charges. Motorola, Kenwood, Icom, Entel, Vertex Standard, HYT, Tait are some of the best radio devices one can consider for short range communication.

Applications:

These radio sets are extensively used in Construction companies to communicate with working engineers inside the site. Police department also uses these devices to communicate with local offices to prevent crimes. Manufacturing companies, retail companies also often use these devices. They also come handy in public events like wedding, receptions for local communication between personals.

Talk Radio Show - Cost Benefits of Your Own Talk Radio Show

One of the first benefits of of your own talk radio show is the cost. Do you think that all talk radio shows have hosts the radio station or broadcasting network pays to be their radio personality to host? Well some do. And of course there are many radio talk show personalities that do get paid big bucks for hosting a talk show. There are talk shows you are familiar with like sports, liberal politics, conservative politics, finance, health, religion and other radio talk shows you may be familiar with big name radio personalities hosting their shows. Of course they get paid the big bucks. That because they paid their dues and built a following.

However, there are literally thousands of "Brokered" talk radio shows where someone with an idea and a dream have gone to a local radio station and PAID for the time to air their 30 minute to 1 hour talk radio show on any number of subjects. Of course most of them have gone out and found sponsors to pay for their air time but that is how most radio talk show hosts in the making built their listener base.

With Internet Talk Radio you don't have to pay for your Internet "Air/Broadcast" time. You don't have to go out and sell advertising spots to sponsors so you can afford to produce your show.

Many brokered "On Air" conventional talk radio shows with larger listener areas, like in the major cities, the monthly cost of your basic air time does not include the cost of your studio engineer and your producer. You have to pay even more for them which means you have to either come up with more sponsors willing to pay more money for ad spots on your show, or you have to personally come up with the cash to cover the difference. Not so with Internet Talk Radio using the services this guide recommends. There is no extra cost for an engineer or producer.

Effective Radio Station Liners and Promo Writing for Today's Market

Look around and what do you see? Ipods®, mini Ipods®, Cell Phones, Satellite radio, Internet radio and Tivo®.

Excited about being in the radio industry today? Since I first entered the world of radio in 1976 I have seen the landscape change, but few stations have changed with the times. The one noticeable lack of change has been in the liner department. The same plan of attack as always. Find a voice, have them cut a few lines every week for freshness and that's it. Creativity is relegated to the program director (PD) who has enough work for two people.

Most PD's have had their creative juices squeezed out of them with meeting after meeting. You need a creative force on your side. A member of your team that is not in the daily grind, but on the outside looking in with an objective view.

Scott has watched for the past twenty years as market share for traditional radio stations continue to decline as newer video games, better ipod® devices and technology yet realized find their way into our reality.

Promos, liners and sweepers are not something you write because they are funny or creative, they are written because they fit the "big picture" concept of the station. Just like the music must have a "feel" so must the liners and other elements.

The demand for creativty within the radio industry has never been greater.

Difference Between HD and Analog Radio

The difference in quality between analog and HD radio is absolutely like night and day and once you have experience HD sound in your car, you most likely will not want to go back to analog. For anyone wanting to experience high CD quality sound in their car, they most certainly should consider upgrading to HD radio.

HD Radio stands for High Definition Radio and just like you may have seen the difference between HD TV and regular TV, HD radio also offers a much cleaner, crystal-clear and free of distortion sound than you can get from analog radio. And that improvement applies to both AM and FM stations alike.

Most people that have experienced HD Radio describe the quality of sound as what you normally get when listening to audio directly from a good quality CD, and that is basically the easiest way to describe it. Somehow in HD radio, the sound comes through virtually free of distortion and without any static or breakups. Not to mention that you also get information like the titles of songs and the artist displayed on your stereo.

Another benefit of HD radio is that you are able to receive many more stations than you normally do on an analog system. The reason for this is that HD transmission normally takes much less bandwidth than analog and therefore there is more room in the broadcast spectrum Prompting many new radio stations to set up shop and start broadcasting in HD.

Unlike HD TV, HD Radio is a free broadcast and all you have to do is get a new HD Radio receiver for your car and you are able to experience it. However, keep in mind that there is also HD Satellite Radio, which is a completely different system and is a paid subscription service.

The price for an HD head unit, surprisingly costs about the same as what you would pay for a traditional analog unit, with some brands naturally costing more than others.

If you are someone who is looking for a worthwhile investment for your Car Audio system, upgrading to HD radio will definitely be worth your money.

Chicago - Saturday in the Park

Chicago - Saturday in the Park Video Clips. Duration : 4.02 Mins.

According to Billboard chart statistics, Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the most successful American rock band of all time, in terms of both albums and singles. Judged by album sales, as certified by the RIAA, the band does not rank quite so high, but it is still among the Top Ten best-selling US groups ever. If such statements of fact surprise, that's because Chicago has been singularly underrated since the beginning of its long career, both because of its musical ambitions (to the musicians, rock is only one of several styles of music to be used and blended, along with classical, jazz, R&B, and pop) and because of its refusal to emphasize celebrity over the music. The result has been that fundamentalist rock critics have consistently failed to appreciate its music and that its media profile has always been low. At the same time, however, Chicago has succeeded in the ways it intended to. From the beginning of its emergence as a national act, it has been able to fill arenas with satisfied fans. And beyond the impressive sales and chart statistics, its music has endured, played constantly on the radio and instantly familiar to tens of millions. When, in 2002, Chicago's biggest hits were assembled together on the two-disc set The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning and the album debuted in the Top 50, giving the band the distinction of having had chart albums in five consecutive decades, the music industry and some music journalists may have been startled ...

PMR446 Two Way Radios - Are They Effective?

LICENCE EXEMPT (PMR446) radios.

These "inexpensive" radios are often seen as a cost effective solution to all radio communications needs.

Unfortunately, they are not all they seem. A large number of these systems are replaced, due to inadequate performance.

We call them "Argos specials!"

The advertising claims for these units can be quite misleading.

"Up to 3 miles range." Means just what it says... It MIGHT work 3 miles! (Probably downhill, with a back-wind.)

Additionally, even within the PMR446 market there are both "toys" and "professional" grade equipment.

The specifications allow for a transmit power of 500mW (1/2 Watt). However. equipment can be produced more cheaply with a much lower rated transmit power, which are invariably the "toys" which can be purchased very cheaply on the High Street.

Time for a little history:

In 1997 Europe decided on a section of the 446MHz frequency band to be used for a new licence exempt short range radio communication system. The UK introduced the PMR446 service in early 1999, so PMR446 is quite a mature, reliable system.

The distance covered, or range, of any radio depends on a number of factors. Obstructions such as buildings will restrict range, whereas in open areas range will increase. The height of radios above the surrounding terrain will also improve performance.

Range could also normally be improved by increasing transmit power or fitting a higher performance antenna, but with PMR446 equipment these options are prohibited, in order to comply with the PMR446 regulations. Remember this system was intended to be "short range".

Range can extend many kilometers between high vantage points, or be limited to only a few meters or a few hundred meters, if a hill or large building is between radio units.

There are eight channels available, with a number of signalling options, so you don't hear other users who are sharing your selected channel.

Note: the other users are still there, and you will cause interference to each other if you transmit at the same time. Your radio is just kept quiet whilst you aren't in conversation.

Strangely, when thought about in this way, the extra signalling is only in use while the radio is not being used.

The bottom line with PMR446 is that it can be perfectly adequate for strictly short range, non-critical applications.

The most usable areas for PMR446 tend to be outside large conurbations, where the available 8 channels can get quite congested.

HD Radio Technology - the Next Big Thing in Sound

The next big thing in sound is here and it's called HD Radio Technology. It's on its way to doing for radio what HDTV has done for television.

HD radio technology has already taken Great Britain and much of Europe by storm and will soon do the same thing here.

HD Radio technology is great because it makes it possible for FM stations to sound nearly as good as if you were listening to a CD. The sound is just amazing - clean, pure and crystal-clear. It even enables AM stations to sound as good as an FM station today.

Let's pretend you're a talk radio fan. Just imagine how much better your experience will be when there's no distortion, no annoying hiss, crackle, fade or static. It will be just like listening to your favorite AM station broadcast in FM.

And if music is your thing, you'll love HD Radio technology even more because you'll be able to hear music on your favorite classic or rock station in the clearest, cleanest, purest form ever available over the airways and free!.

Plus Multicasting or HD2 channels

In fact, this technology even makes it possible for your local stations to broadcast in true 5.1 surround sound. Just imagine that. You turn on your favorite music station and you are immediately surrounded by sound -- just as if you were sitting in your favorite concert hall.

HD Radio technology also makes possible a technology called multicasting that allows stations to broadcast two or more different signals simultaneously. So, your favorite oldies stations could also be broadcasting hip-hop or R&B at the same time.

More than 1,000 stations are already broadcasting in HD Radio technology. And HD radios are available for the home and car.

So far, radio stations have not done much publicity on this exciting, new form of broadcasting but you can bet that will be changing in the near future.

Radio Microphones

Audio mikes that used the cables for signal transmissions have long since been replaced with wireless mikes. Also called Radio mikes, they use radio frequency technology to transmit the audio signals. They are capable of sending signals through FM, AM, UHF, VHF and various digital formats.

The most modern mike sets come equipped with frequency selection modes with which you can set the required frequency without having interference from other transmitters operating at the same frequency band nearby. You are now able to use multiple microphones too at the same time.

The current radio microphones owe their origin to the first original compander microphone that was built by Nady Systems in 1976. He was honored with Emmy award in 1996 in honor of his contribution to the field of technology.

Radio mikes are wireless and hence it is easier for the performers to use them on stage and it is a lot safer too when compared to the wires and cables dangling from wired mikes.

The Radio mikes being wireless have provided freedom of movement and performance to the artists who perform on stage. They can freely move across the stage without having to drag or bother with the cables. The handling staff too need not bother with managing and joining cables etc.

Though Radio mikes are very good, there is yet one disadvantage when it comes to the battery life. The radio batteries tend to get drained out very fast and do not last long. The reason being that the radio microphones use up more power and drain the batteries in no time.

Radio mikes operate within a certain range only. This could be a drawback and you might have to buy higher end equipment to get wider range. Then there is also the risk of disruption of signals due to other equipments being used in the same frequency in near by area.

Many times you will be constrained to use fewer numbers of microphones to be able to retain the clarity and avoid clashing of frequency.

What Is Radio Frequency?

RF is an acronym that stands for Radio Frequency. Radio Frequency is a term that is usually referring to a rate of oscillation that takes place in the range of 30 kHz to 300 Ghz. These correspond to a special frequency that is used to transmit and receive radio waves, which is where the name comes from.

RF is a term that is almost always referring to an electrical oscillation, as opposed to a mechanical oscillation. However, it is important to note that mechanical systems of this type do indeed exist.

Before radio communication can be received, it is necessary to have an antenna in place to pick it up. However, since an antenna cannot distinguish between the thousands of signals that it will pick up at the exact same time during use, a tuner is needed to narrow down the source of the signal.

A tuner will help you to tune in to a specific frequency, which will in turn help you control what "channel" you are dialing into and picking up with your antenna. The tuner usually makes use of a resonator that amplifies oscillations of the desired frequency to a point where they are distinguishable over the rest of the "noise".

RF energy is also used in the medical field. For example, some minimally invasive surgeries make use of RF energy for coagulation and radio frequency ablation. This, for example, can be used to treat conditions such as sleep apnea.

RF electrical currents also display a very interesting set of properties. For example, RF currents can ionize air and create conductive paths right through it. Another example lies in how RF electrical currents travel along the surface of conductors instead of penetrating through...aka the "skin effect".

Create Your Own Online Radio Show

An excellent way to get your message across is to use online radio as a forum for creating a radio show. More and more people are listening to podcasts and listening to their favorite shows through portable music players, which provides you with an opportunity to start a show to share your point of view, opinions and resources over the internet.

Podcasts are saved directly after they are recorded, allowing you to add them to online websites or make them available for download by anyone who wants one. There are internet programs that allow you to have callers give you feedback or ask you questions while the show is being recorded, making each program completely informative.

The first step in starting a show of your very own on online radio is to make sure you have the proper equipment to begin recording. You will need a comfortable headset with a microphone, recording software on your computer, and a program that will help you to edit your recording to prepare it to be placed on the internet. You will also need an extension converter program to ensure that you can save your show in a format to be downloaded.

The second step in creating your online radio program is to make sure you create an outline of your show, kind of like a template, that you can follow for each show. You will want to have a welcome or introduction, a segment on news or facts, a question answering section, or some other vital parts as a format that you can stick to with each show. It is important to do this in order to keep your program organized.

The third step is to come up with at least 5 - 10 online radio programs that you can record, to get a database going. You don't want your potential audience to become bored with only 2 - 3 choices to listen to when you first come on the air, so be sure to create a nice amount of listening choices so that as you create more, you will have enough to whet your audience's appetite.

The fourth step is to seek out advertising options so that you will create a following of listeners to your online radio show. You have plenty of choices for creating traffic to your show, and the first thing you should do is create a simple web page where your show can be showcased. As you create links, comment on blogs, and add banners to your website, other individuals who will want to link to your information will be able to find you there.

The Role of Radio Today

With such amazing developments in the technological world especially with the more recent development of the Internet, radio can often be thought of as a bit old fashioned.

Of course this is not the case and the use and progression of radio itself is still continuing at a very fast pace.

One of the earliest adoptions of radio was it's use in the maritime industry. Telegraphic messages are still used today to send messages between ships and the land, as well as themselves.

The word radio itself for many conjures up images of the 'wireless'. It's still in use today, but with less popularity than in it's heyday, with all the other forms of media that are now so prevalent. Originally all broadcasts came via and AM. AM is Amplitude modulation. Later broadcasts developed into FM which had a higher level of fidelity and was not susceptible to the same levels of static, or interference.

Television pictures come from an AM signal and originally when mobile, or cell phones were first developed they also made use of FM signals, although this has now changed.

It's also interesting to note that radio is still playing a major role in the maritime sector and not just in the maritime sector but for navigation in every sector, with the use of satellite systems.

RADAR is also based on radio waves, although most of the new systems that are produced are digital ones. Basically radio waves are bounced off different objects. The position of these objects are then determined by the amount of time it takes the reflection. The process can also be used to determine the direction and the type of surface of the object.

Radio is also used in others areas that many people might not think of. Examples of this would be in surgery where people can find radio being used to seal blood vessels using diathermy equipment. It's also used to heat up food and drinks in a microwave oven.

How You Can Use a Two Way Radio

You've probably seen walkie talkies used by cops and security personnel walking around hotels. They are usually placed on the belt and sound is heard even when it's not used. The digital age enabled the development of new gadgets particularly the rise of cellular phones. Nowadays, we can send SMS messages and call people with in seconds. However, have you ever wondered why two-way radios are still around?

The advantages of 2-way radios are the faster service and cheaper calls. Cellular phone companies charge by the minute of a phone conversation or per SMS. The difference with two-way radios is talking to the person immediately and in "real-time." The time spent connecting to the person on the receiving end when using a mobile device is eliminated. There is also no busy tone sent because the network doesn't get too clogged up. This ensures that a call is done right the first time.

Some other people who are use two-way radios are event coordinators. As you see in movies, they use walkie talkies for advising one another of the activities and whereabouts to make sure that everything flows smoothly. The charge of cellular phone networks also depends on the location of the caller and the receiver- meaning the farther they are from each other, the more expensive. With walkie-talkies, you never have to worry about these charges and cut the phone calls short.

Walkie talkie designs have also evolved into stylish ones that come in different colors as compared to the traditional black designs that are very huge and heavy. The different two-way radio developers have adapted the mobile phone designs and used them to create modern designs so that they are perfect for almost every age bracket.

Hand Held Radio Scanners - Which is the Best Radio Scanner For You?

Hand held radio scanners today have the capability of being programmed and have the capacity of storing thousands of channels and also to monitor those channels in the hundreds per second. There are many different models with some great features, so you'll want to look at several to find which is the best radio scanner for you.

Scanners can also handle the various methods of modulation such as AM (amplitude modulation), FM (frequency modulation) and WFM ( wide-band frequency modulation). Radio amateur bands are also covered as are weather information transmissions, industrial, business, taxi services and hobbyist transmissions.

With a wide variety of choices and manufacturers, the best scanner, unlike most radios, can receive signals transmitted at a wide range of frequencies, allowing users to listen in on a variety of different communications including air traffic control, emergency services (police, ambulance and fire), hobbyists (Citizens Band), race teams, astronauts...et cetera.

Basic hand held radio scanners have 100 channels and that's probably going to be enough for a hobbyist just starting out. At the other end, the top of the line Bearcat scanner has 25,000 channels that can be programmed.

You can program a name to correspond with the service so you can see at a glance who you're listening to, and program up to 100 frequencies in banks of 10 for simpler access. You can place channels that are related to the same topic in one bank and then with the push of a button access only the channels in that bank.

If someone wants to use the scanner to listen to only one type of frequency, like the fire department, and they live in a small town, they won't need a huge number of channels. But someone living in a large town or city will need more channels to listen in on the police department transmissions.

Most police and fire departments use radio frequencies and channels that are linked through a trunk system. If you want to listen to police and fire frequencies, then you will want to get a scanner that has this feature.

A Uniden bearcat radio scanner is an excellent choice, especially if you want high speed scanning. You may not really need all the options on their state of the art models, but with all the different Uniden radio scanners available, you are sure to find a scanner that fits both your needs and your budget.

Two Way Radios, How Far Do They Work?

A very common question we hear regarding 2 way radios is "How far will they work?" Unfortunately, this is a little like the old "how long is a piece of string?" question. A large number of factors affect the range of two way radios.

Transmit power, antenna efficiency, user height above ground and surrounding terrain are just some of these factors to take into account. The only practical comparison which we can make is in a mythical "ideal" situation, flat ground with no obstructions. As the most popular 2 way radio systems are the simplex, hand portable type, we'll discuss them first.

A good general guide is to expect a portable radio with 1 Watt transmit power on the flat (no obstructions) to provide around 1 mile of coverage. Doubling the transmitter power increases the range by about 1/3, so... At 2 watts we should get about 1.3 miles. At 4 watts the range may be around 1.7 miles.

As can be seen above, the link between transmit power and range is not as we might expect. We have to quadruple transmit power to gain less than twice the range! Note that here in the UK, portables are generally restricted to 5 Watts.

Although, it restricts the use of the radio somewhat, mobile radios permanently installed into vehicles will perform better. As the general restriction in the UK is 25 watts for mobiles, we end up with around 3 to 4 miles range, dependent on the antenna. Again, this assumes a simplex system, talking directly from one mobile to another.

If a base station is used within the system, it's range is improved by the installation of an external antenna on the roof of the building. The higher the antenna, the better the range. Again, the rule of thumb is very similar to the above... doubling the antenna height does not double the range! The range between mobiles is not affected unless the base station is a "repeater type" which enables mobile transmissions to "hop" between users. We get asked the same question time and time again. "How can I increase my range?"

As shown above, a LARGE increase in antenna height is needed (big cost implications). Or, a LARGE increase in transmit power. Here in the UK, OFCOM are the licensing authority and are unlikely to authorise this. Due to the lack of available frequencies, they tend to restrict coverage of radio systems to allow re-use of frequencies in adjacent geographical areas.

Why Do You Need a Business Two Way Radio?

The business band describes a series of frequencies on the VHF and UHF two-way radio bands which are reserved for usage by businesses. They are usually less populated than public frequencies, so they have less cross-chatter with unaffiliated parties. The exact frequencies this band uses depend on your domestic regulator, as this is not a global service.

Do I really need a business two way radio?

Business two way radios are more expensive than consumer two way radios, even though their features are usually very similar. However, there is a number of reasons why you would be better off using more expensive business two way radios for your company, rather than GMRS of FRS radios.

Licensing and Power Issues

We can easily exclude FRS radios from our list, since their 0.5 watt limit on transmission power makes them unsuitable for reliable business usage at ranges which exceed half a mile. GMRS radios, on the other hand, look a bit more tempting. The problem with them is that GMRS licenses are only issued to individuals (and their immediate family members), meaning that every employee of your company who wants to use a radio, would need a license (unless you run a family business, of course) at 80$ per license.

These licenses are good for 5 years, after that they need to be re-issued. A business band license for your business (i.e., all employees) costs 5. While the initial acquisition of business two way radio devices is a bit more expensive, you will actually save licensing money in the long run and enjoy a better service.

Longer Battery Life

Business two way radios usually include much larger batteries, making them able to run more than 12 hours per charge. Consumer two way radios, on the contrary, include smaller batteries which provide around 8 hours of usage.

Accessories

Business radios typically have a better selection of accessories than consumer radios. If accessories, such as headsets or earpieces, are important to your business, you should look at what accessories are available before you choose a radio. Things like rapid chargers and multi unit chargers are only available for business radios.

Durability

Another important factor is the increased durability of business two way radios. While consumer radios are designed for infrequent use, business radio products are designed to hold up to much more abuse. Their construction is much more sturdy and with better materials. Many are build to military specifications. This, of course, in addition to their larger batteries, makes them a bit heavier than consumer two way radios.

Verdict

Bearing the above information in mind, it should now be obvious why a professional who is serious about his communication needs should get a business band two way radio.

The studio version from the album has never been released as a single. McCartney dedicated the song to his wife, Linda, who had helped him during the break-up of The Beatles. Later, McCartney's band Wings released a single of a live performance of the song from the band's 1976 tour of America, which became a top-ten hit in the United States. McCartney wrote the song in 1969, just before The Beatles' breakup. He credited his wife Linda with helping him get through the difficult time. Although most of his debut solo album was recorded at his farm in Scotland, McCartney recorded Maybe I'm Amazed entirely in EMI's Number Two studio in London, where he was mixing the rest of the tracks. While Paul declined to release the song as a single in 1970, it nonetheless received a great deal of radio airplay worldwide, making it one of his most recognizable solo successes. The original studio version of the song ended with a fade instead of a full ending, but McCartney later composed an ending that can be heard on the live versions of the song. A live recording from the 1976 album Wings over America was released as a single by McCartney's band Wings on 4 February 1977 and reached #10 in the United States on the Billboard pop charts. Radio Scanner Frequencies - The Popular Ones

Radio is one of the oldest means of communication and it is used by the people even now. There are many people around the world who use the radio now. In a radio certain frequencies has to be set so that you can listen to the station. But there are some people who hack the frequencies with the help of the radio scanner frequencies. This hacking is mainly done by the deceitful people. The radio frequencies are also used for providing the people with many types of information and news and many more. There are many radio users in the world even now so this business has been gaining grounds in the recent past. The radio is very common nowadays as many stations provide many services to their listeners.

The radio scanner frequencies are nowadays used for fun. The people across the world listen to the songs and moreover there are people who listen to the news in the radio. There are many places in the world where other medium of communication are not present and so the radio is the most common mode of communication. These radio scanner frequencies are also used for the high frequency communication for very private communications. The scanners are most common in the radio stations and so they send signals in the form of frequencies. The radio stations have been using very high level technologies for the improvement of the scanner frequencies so that their users can be provided with a very clear sound.

Shortwave Radio Antennas

Shortwave radio antennas are a necessity for the shortwave radio operator as they are what sends and brings in the signal across the airwaves into the radio. The benefits of the radio antennas are that they enable a greater and stronger signal to and from the radio. Antennas are made up of a single long wire that is clipped to the radio with a supporting stand or installed on a tower outside the building. For the towers and shortwave radio antennas installed outside, it is important to make sure that there is limited interference from trees, power lines and buildings. Local zoning regulations may also need to be checked on and followed.

Without a radio antenna attached to your shortwave, the radio can only receive a limited number of broadcasts from a shorter distance away. Many shortwave radios are used to exchange emergency information when the larger commercial radio stations are unable to be operated, for example in case of a national emergency or disaster. The different types of communication that short wave radio aerial antennas can receive includes locally broadcast emergency fire and police dispatch and responders; broadcasts from amateur broadcasters in the country and other countries; cultural programs from individual countries and transmissions from ships to shore and airplanes to aviation towers.

One of the best reasons to upgrade your short wave radio aerial antenna is that it will allow you more time to see what is out there and what is being broadcast by other shortwave operators. If you have your short wave radio in a good place, you can hook up the antenna into a tall tree so improve reception there are special radio antenna that can be carried by backpack to increase the range in wilderness areas. Some of the types of short wave radio antenna are configured into a loop, with places to attach it to the radio.

The base of the antenna is black, with the loop of wire resting on it or inserted into the side for better a more level and stable surface. There are other short wave radio aerial antennas that are wireless and even operated by solar power. These other antenna will also allow reception of other signals then shortwave signals generated by individuals and operators. The great reception includes long wave and short wave with the other signals that are used by ship to shore operators and air traffic control.

Shortwave radios are used to keep standard time so they are ideal for listening to accurate up to the minute reports on news, weather and any other programs available to the listeners shortwave radio antenna. A portable shortwave antenna is available to take with a handheld short wave radio, the shortwave radio antennas clips over the existing one and brings in clearer reception from operators across the country and globe. If you add headphones then the shortwave radio is able to be heard in otherwise noisy circumstances or places such as car races, sporting events and noisy public transportation.

Using words I never say I can only think it must be love Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day Someone tell me how I feel It's silly wrong but vivid right Oh, kiss me like the final meal Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight Cause holy cow, I love your eyes And only now I see the light Yeah, lying with me half-awake Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day When my face is chamois-creased If you think I'll wink, I did Laugh politely at repeats Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin Cause holy cow, I love your eyes And only now I see you like Yeah, lying with me half-awake Stumbling over what to say Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day So throw those curtains wide! One day like this a year'd see me right!

AOL Radio - The End of Local Radio?

Online radio services such as AOL Radio, Pandora, Slacker and Last.fm have become rather popular lately and are even available on many portable wireless devices such as cell phones. Does this mean the end of traditional radio stations? I will look at the impact of streaming radio on the radio landscape.

Local radio stations do seem to have a hard time these days. Satellite radio has been cutting the market share of traditional radio stations severely in the past few years by offering mobility, a large number of commercial-free music channels as well as news and entertainment channels. In particular, online radio has become quite popular by offering a virtually unlimited number of radio stations.

Many internet radio services such as Pandora are now available on portable devices such as cell phones and other wireless audio devices via appropriate apps. This adds mobility to online radio which has still been the trump card of local radio stations.

AOL Radio which boasts 200 plus music channels of 25 genres uses CBS radio as its underlying platform. It also offers access to 150 national CBS radio stations. The underlying platform "play.it" also has a feature that allows listeners to create their own radio stations by entering preferred albums, artists etc. The individual tracks of each music channel are also available for storage on an iPod through 3rd-party software.

Other online music services have followed suit and are offering similar customized music channels. Pandora and Last.fm allow listeners to enter the name of an artist and then play music by randomly selecting titles by the chosen artist as well as other titles which are similar in genre or character. However, most online radio broadcasters lack the ability to create fully customized radio stations such as the "play.it" platform.

Does online radio mean the end of local radio? The growing number of options clearly is going to shrink the market share of traditional radio broadcasters. Online radio is particular useful for niche broadcasters who have been unable to broadcast due to the high cost and licensing of frequency space.

While the variety of stations is a benefit to listeners, it is at the same time diluting the audio and online radio broadcasters are finding it difficult to attract a reasonably large number of listeners and be profitable. At the same time, however, there is less pressure to insert commercials due to the lower costs of broadcasting compared with traditional stations. This has made online radio content more appealing than terrestrial radio.

One big plus of local stations though is local content such as news or current events. In addition, local radio is now improving the audio quality by using digital transmission technologies versus traditional FM broadcasts which has been a big plus of online radio thus far. The big factors that will ultimately determine the fate of each technology are content and convenience. Online radio and traditional radio each have their own niche in terms of offering unique content and both offer high mobility and convenience so there will probably be no clear winner.

A Security Analysis of the APCO Project 25 Two-Way Radio System

A Security Analysis of the APCO Project 25 Two-Way Radio System Tube. Duration : 30.20 Mins.

Why (Special Agent) Johnny (Still) Can't Encrypt: A Security Analysis of the APCO Project 25 Two-Way Radio System Refereed Paper presented by Matt Blaze (University of Pennsylvania) at the 20th USENIX Security Symposium (USENIX Security '11), held August 8--12, 2011, in San Francisco, CA. Awarded Outstanding Paper Authors: Sandy Clark, Travis Goodspeed, Perry Metzger, Zachary Wasserman, Kevin Xu, and Matt Blaze, University of Pennsylvania Abstract: APCO Project 25 ("P25") is a suite of wireless communications protocols used in the US and elsewhere for public safety two-way (voice) radio systems. The protocols include security options in which voice and data traffic can be cryptographically protected from eavesdropping. This paper analyzes the security of P25 systems against both passive and active adversaries. We found a number of protocol, implementation, and user interface weaknesses that routinely leak information to a passive eavesdropper or that permit highly efficient and difficult to detect active attacks. We introduce new selective subframe jamming attacks against P25, in which an active attacker with very modest resources can prevent specific kinds of traffic (such as encrypted messages) from being received, while emitting only a small fraction of the aggregate power of the legitimate transmitter. We also found that even the passive attacks represent a serious practical threat. In a study we conducted over a two year period in several US metropolitan areas, we ...

The C Crane Radio - Modern Take on an Old Technology

After the invention the of iPods and MP3 players, regular old radio seemed to be lost totally in the sands of times. Recently, though, there have been a few major changes in the radio, which may bring radios into fashion again. In fact, the major upgrades which have been included in the latest model of the C. Crane radio is innovative and way beyond comparison. These radios are really very handy if you do not have a mounting desk for MP3 players in your car. They look like a normal radio with one tiny receptor and one small LCD with a woofer at its side.

And yet their internal mechanics have improved over time as of yet they are offering us much more than the mere Fm frequencies. With their radio kit specially the newer model launched, you will get FM, AM, Internet radio, weather forecast and also TV audio.

These radios have various other controllers which really help in improvising the signal. For The volume there is the sound knob, plus an additional bass and treble knob, And then you have the tuning knob of course. There are other buttons too to select the desired radio function.

These radios come with a 6 watt woofer so the volume wont be a problem even when you are driving or out in the woods for a picnic. The design is nothing to be proud of. It is a simplistic and normal design. These radios are available in black color only.

The inner mechanics include a twin coil ferrite antenna which as claimed by the company really helps in getting better signal reception. These have a great battery life too.

The company claims that this radio has a battery life of over 30 hours on AA batteries and 175 hours over D batteries. They come to us with one year warranty, which is a small time compared to today's standards. But if you want yourself a portable music station and wan to keep in touch with the current music trends this device is just for you. Reception is pretty good in house and also while on the road.

The Battery life and added speakers give us an extra advantage plus if you want to listen through headphones there is a stereo 3. 5mm jack included at the side of it. Additional features included in newer models are the radio alarm clock which will be helpful only if you doze off to sleep while on long trips. So buy it if you like to pamper yourself with a lot of quality music, and listen to The US TOP charts while driving on a long journey.

Emacs Org-mode - a system for note-taking and project planning

Emacs Org-mode - a system for note-taking and project planning Tube. Duration : 46.93 Mins.

Google Tech Talks July 15, 2008 ABSTRACT Org-mode is a large Emacs sub-systems that has been integrated into Emacs with the version 22.1 release. From it original intend, Org-mode is a system for structured note-taking and project planning. It uses strictly plain text files, making it a truly portable, system-independent solution. The project-planning features are implemented using a fairly simple outlining paradigm, upon which meta-data concepts like due dates, priorities, TODO states and tags are overlayed in a non-intrusive way. Besides outlining the system and its basic concepts, I will give background information into the history of Org-mode and discuss the properties of such an evolved system compared to a top-down designed one. Finally, I will also briefly touch on some technical aspects that may be interesting for Emacs wizards and developers. Speaker: Carsten Dominik
