After being explained to that he can use a machine called the Animus to relive his ancestors memories he agrees to cooperate with Abstergo. The game primarily takes place during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land in 1191. Altair, Desmond's ancestor, is a disgraced assassin because he broke the three tenets of the assassins. In order to regain his former status he must hunt down nine key targets. Altair reluctantly agrees and his slowly hunts down the men he realizes they all have something in common. As the story develops, a struggle is shown between two factions, the Knights Templar and the Assassins, over an artifact known as a "Piece of Eden", an ancient artifact used to control minds.
